Sorority Life: The Real Truth Behind TLC’s “Sorority Girls”

I’m proud to be a Sigma Chi.  At the same time, I’m proud to be pro-woman & pro-Panhellenic.  (You’ve got to love men who are both/all of the above.)

As someone who is pro-Panhellenic, nothing draws my ire more than movies/television shows which paint sorority women – & for that matter, Greek life in general – in a negative, inaccurate & unflattering way.  Latest case in point:  TLC’s newest show, Sorority Girls.

For the record, Sorority Girls is one of the worst & most inaccurate portrayals of Greek life I’ve ever seen in my lifetime & any sorority women who have seen the show firsthand should be echoing my sentiments.   If that’s not enough bad news, Sorority Girls is one of those shows which shouldn’t even be aired to the viewing public.  (Come to think of it, SG is another good reason why non-Greeks loathe sororities/women’s fraternities in the first place.)

For those women who haven’t seen this show just yet, you’re probably wondering what Sorority Girls is all about, so here’s the rundown:

Five women from across the country have chosen to start their very own sorority, Sigma Gamma, in the United Kingdom.  This in itself is disheartening, given that these women are also members of sororities/women’s fraternities at their respective colleges/universities.  Even though I’m a Sig, I can’t stomach the fact that any sorority woman in their right mind would want to start another Sorority/women’s Fraternity if they already belong to a NPC organization.

It would literally be an understatement to call TLC’s Sorority Girls an “inaccurate” portrayal of sorority life – it most certainly is, but in my honest opinion, it’s also a personal insult to any woman out there wearing Greek letters as SG miseducates others about how beautiful Greek life truly is & what Greek life is truly about.  To make a long story short, Sorority Girls is a shame/disgraceful/disrespectful/derogatory to true sorority women everywhere & for that matter, other Greek organizations.

What place does exclusivity have in our Sororities/women’s Fraternities?  None.  What place does public humiliation have in our Sororities/women’s Fraternities?  None.  What place does spilling the beans about Ritual secrets have in our Sororities/women’s Fraternities?  None.  The Founders of our organizations would be hopping mad if they saw that Sorority Girls is all of the above & much worse.

If you still haven’t signed the petition to get TLC’s Sorority Girls off the air, don’t hesitate to do so.  For those women who have, I commend you all, because this show is everything a true Sorority/women’s Fraternity is not, never was & never will be!!
