“These letters don’t make me better than you; these letters make me better than I used to be.“
Whenever we wear our letters on campus – or even when we’re not actually wearing them – we need to be reminded of some things that we tend to forget every now & then:
No matter which Sororities/Fraternities we represent, we’re called upon to set & live high standards & expectations day in & day out. Not when we “want to” & not when we “feel like it,” mind you. We’re called upon to set & live our organizations’ high standards & expectations on a daily basis.
The things which we say & do with our letters on – whether it be good or bad – directly leave their impact on our chapters, our sisters, & to a much greater degree, our Sororities/Fraternities. (Like I’ve said numerous times, the first impressions we make with those letters on are lasting ones.)
Our letters don’t give us a license to say to other sorority women, “We’re better than you,” or even worse, “We’re better than you’ll ever be.” On the contrary. Our Sororities/Fraternities are shaping us into not only leaders & difference-makers for our chapters, campuses & communities – they’re also shaping us into the women we’ve always wanted to become!!
When we wear our letters proudly on campus – or even when we’re not literally wearing them – we’re also living the values which define who our Sororities/Fraternities are, what our Sororities/Fraternities do & what our Sororities/Fraternities are about.
When we wear our letters, we’re also living a lifetime commitment, a lifetime responsibility. Our letters define who we are as sorority women, what we do as sorority women & what we’re all about.
Above all, our letters don’t make us better than other sorority women on campus – our own sisters included. (Let’s face it, all sorority women are amazing in their own way & on their own terms.) But our letters do make us into better women. They do make us into better leaders. They do make us into better difference-makers. And they make us so much better than we used to be.
We’re not only wearing our letters on dazzling tees/sweatshirts (or even hats & sorority totes). We’re also wearing them on our hearts as well.
